Beyond Core Control – Pilates Exercises and the Muscular Sling, Workshop
August 8: 1:15-3pm
Pilates exercise has long been known to work from the ‘inside - out’. We first recruit muscles of core stabilization to form a stable base from which to work. We then move our trunk and limbs with larger muscle groups to create our everyday functional movements. When our ‘stabilizers’ and ‘mobilizers’ are working efficiently the result is optimally coordinated and efficient movement. As instructors and practitioners of Pilates exercise, creating awareness of these muscle groups and their proper facilitation is one of our main objectives. We will focus on the muscles that we call the mobilizers of the body and will investigate their crucial role in movement as well as in providing more stability and protection for the inner, stabilizing muscles and joints. We will look at the body from a ‘muscular slings’ perspective using the concepts of Andry Vleeming and relate them, in a systematic way, to Pilates exercises. Vleeming proposed five muscular slings of the body, one inner sling and four outer slings. Find out more, attend the class. |

Action with Awareness: Learning with The Feldenkrais Method
3-hour Pre-Conference Workshop
August 7: 9-12noon
A 3-hour introduction to the Feldenkrais Method’s unique strategies for change and improvement. Learn how functional patterns of movement can be improved both in oneself and your clients. Includes 2 group lessons and a demonstration of working hands-on with an individual.
In this pre-conference workshop, participants will be introduced to many of the core principles of the Feldenkrais Method. We’ll focus on how to accurately distinguish appropriate patterns of muscular effort in ourselves and others: ones that produce smooth, efficient, coordinated action, as opposed to the “over efforting” that often interrupts our organization and becomes embedded in patterns of pain and stiffness. Participants will also experience how the proper sequencing and timing of joint use and heightened awareness of the skeleton in movement can help clients reduce superfluous muscular effort and improve their flexibility, strength, balance and a more optimal use of the core musculature of the trunk and pelvis.
The first group lesson will examine the coordination of the dynamic relationship between the lower back and abdomen and how they can be organized for more powerful transmission of your intention through the arms and legs. We will use a variety of positions to explore the crucial issues of distribution of muscular effort along the spine, the coordination of the breath and the changing relationship of the head and pelvis. Participants will learn how attending to these elements help expand the possibilities for flexibility and spinal length throughout an entire movement.
The second lesson will investigate more closely examine diagonal patterns of function between the shoulders and pelvis. We will use the initial position of standing on four points of support (hands and feet) to perform a series of variations that take us through sitting, standing, squatting and more ballistic movements of the arms and legs. This lesson addresses balance, weight bearing, skeletal alignment, and emphasizes a real-time awareness of the changing demands on the proximal musculature of the spine during changes of position.

Breath as a Source in Pilates, Lecture
August 8: 7:15-8:45am
This workshop will analyze the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of the "breath as source" in Pilates training. Joseph Pilates said, "Before any real benefit can be derived from physical exercise, one must first learn how to breathe properly - this all important function requires individual instruction, not only by precept, but by example." With practice, we can use the breath to improve functional movement and create more efficient biomechanics. In addition, mental and emotional blocks related to certain movements can be released through better connection to how we breathe. By tapping into a deeper awareness of the breath, we help clients improve both steadiness and rhythm, as well as dynamic flow. Finally, we will learn how a focus on the "breath as source" can alter not only physical performance, but an overall feeling of comfort and joy in the class, in sessions, and in conscious daily living.
